The Madison Bulldogs wrestling team has a shot to send a number of athletes to the State Wrestling Meet this season. There are several Bulldogs heading into the Region 1A Tournament on Saturday with a chance to do something special; if there are a number of wrestlers who qualify for the State Tournament, this could be a very special ending for the Bulldogs on the mat.

There are two Bulldogs heading into the regional tournament with 30-plus wins this season, and they both have byes in the opening round. Colby Mennis

(113) has a 32-8 record while Nolan Johnson (132) has a 30-9 record.

Two other Madison wrestlers have first-round byes: Bailey Mennis (138) 25-5 and Noah Guse (145) 22-3.

Three other Bulldog wrestlers have 20-plus wins and will be in action in the opening round - Truman Stoller (106) 24-16, Jarred Hodges (152) 29-10 and Nate Guthmiller (195) 26-5.

Other wrestlers who will be representing Madison at the Region 1A Tournament are AJ Peters (120) 11-19; Braeden DeJabet (126) 16-17; Spencer Monroe (160) 3-18; Donny Price (170) 10-17; Cole Leighton (182) 17-8; Brandon Shaw (220) 8-22; and Preston Smithers (285) 4-10.

All of the weight classes are filled for the Bulldogs heading into postseason, and that should help cap off what has been a successful season for Madison.

Teams competing in the Region 1A Tournament are Madison, Brookings, Dell Rapids, Flandreau Indian School, Sioux Falls O'Gorman, Sioux Falls Roosevelt, Watertown and West Central.

The tournament is at West Central High School with action beginning at 10 a.m.
