The Madison City Commission approved on Monday a land transfer from owners David and Amy Overby of Madison to the city the north section of a lot owned by the couple in northwest Madison.

David Overby met with the city commissioners during their meeting and proposed transferring the northern part of his lot (about 150 feet in length) to the city. The Overbys had written a letter to the mayor and commissioners on Dec. 3 making the proposal.

The Overbys said that they did not use the property and the northern part of the lot floods each spring.

Mayor Roy Lindsay told David Overby that he wasn’t opposed to the transfer, but he wanted the couple to install at least six trees of significant height to provide a tree line that would delineate the property’s new boundary.

Commissioner Bob Thill raised objections to the transfer, saying that the city would have to accept an extra expense in maintaining the property. Thill added that city officials might find themselves beset with even more requests in the future by landowners to take over pieces of property.

Lindsay and Commissioners Kelly Johnson and Mike Waldner approved the transfer, and Thill voted against approval.  Commissioner Jeremiah Corbin was absent from the meeting.
