The Madison Police Department released information on Thursday afternoon that Jacob Glen Meinders, a 21-year-old Madison man, was arrested on two counts of aggravated assault on a child under the age of 7.

Authorities also charged Meinders with alternative counts of abuse of or cruelty to a minor, with the charges stemming from a Sept. 29 incident involving a 3-year-old Madison boy.  Each charge carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in the South Dakota State Penitentiary and up to $30,000 in fines.

Local law enforcement responded to an emergency call during the early morning hours of Tuesday, Sept. 29, at a residence within the city of Madison involving an unresponsive child. The child was reported to have fallen down a flight of stairs.  The child was transported to a Sioux Falls hospital where he later died.

In his latest press release, Chief Justin Meyer of the Madison Police Department announced that the investigation is on-going and authorities expect to file additional charges. The police have also cautioned that Meinders is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
