Travis Lee Smith Jr. appeared in Third Circuit Court at the Lake County Courthouse on Monday afternoon where his defense attorney requested a reduction in bail.

Smith was present for his initial appearance in the Madison courtroom with Angela O’Kane, a Madison attorney. He was dressed in a jail fatigues and was restrained with handcuffs and a waist chain during the court session.

After listening to comments made by O’Kane and the Lake County state’s attorney, Judge Patrick Pardy decided to set Smith’s bond at $80,000 cash.

Smith, 25, was arrested in Madison during the early morning hours of Sunday, accused of starting fires at the Uptown Apartments in downtown Madison and the One Stop convenience store on the city’s west side that same night. During the arrest, Smith allegedly committed aggravated assault on one law enforcement officer and simple assault on two other officers.

Manuel de Castro, Lake County state’s attorney, told Pardy that Smith was charged with several serious offenses that included first-degree arson, reckless burning, third-degree burglary and several assaults. Related to the charges, de Castro said Smith is accused of setting fire to an occupied building and creating $2 million in fire damage to the convenience store. The state’s attorney also told Pardy that from his viewing of video related to the assault charges, de Castro considered that the aggravated assault could have led to a death if the other two officers had not arrived at the scene.

Two officers were hospitalized after Smith’s arrest that occurred early Sunday near the Madison Pizza Hut.
