The Lake County Commission approved on Tuesday the hiring of a new corrections officer who will work at the Lake County Jail and a couple of other personnel-related requests.

Sheriff Tim Walburg asked the county commissioners to confirm hiring Shane Ortman as a new full-time corrections officer for the county at wages amounting to $15 per hour.

Ortman possesses work experience that includes seven years as a program assistant for the independent living preparation program at McCrossan Boys Ranch near Sioux Falls. The effective date for his new job at the county jail is scheduled on June 10.

The commissioners authorized a wage increase for Stephanie Ryan, office manager at the sheriff's department, after six months of employment working at the position. The 3% cost-of-living increase brings Ryan's pay to $17.25 per hour and becomes effective on June 13.

For the Lake County Director of Equalization Office, the commissioners approved an increase in wages -- to $16.10 per hour -- for Jennie Larson, a certified field appraiser. The 50-cent per hour wage increase was effective on June 4.

Restroom remodeling

The commissioners approved hiring Architecture Incorporated of Sioux Falls to conduct architectural and engineering services for a remodeling project at the Lake County Courthouse.

The architects would work on remodeling public and private restrooms at the courthouse and replacing the waste and ventilation pipes throughout the building. Architecture Incorporated proposed performing the design and administrative work for a $37,400 fee.

Construction on the remodeling project would start in fall 2019 and end in spring 2020.

Fairgrounds concrete

The commissioners approved having Reverts Concrete of Madison renovate sidewalks and a slab between buildings at the county fairgrounds. The project is expected to cost about $15,600.
