Authorities reported that two persons needed medical attention after they were injured in a horse-related accident that occurred in southern Lake County on Sunday afternoon.

Randy Minnaert, Madison fire chief, said first-responders were called at about 2 p.m. to the accident scene near the intersection of 240th St. and 456th Ave. The emergency personnel were called to deal with injuries related to a horse and carriage accident.

Sheriff Tim Walburg of Lake County said several people were in the party that was involved in the accident. They were taking a break when a horse unexpectedly took off down a roadway.

A female was standing next to a carriage and was knocked to the ground. She was airlifted by air ambulance to a Sioux Falls hospital for head injuries. A male was taken to the Madison hospital, Madison Regional Health System, for treatment of minor injuries and was later released.
