Dakota State University has been awarded a $1.46 million grant to help establish a high-speed research network.

The U.S. Department of Commerce announced on Wednesday that the department's Economic Development Administration made the award which will be matched by $1.46 million in local funds.

"DSU's new high-speed network will help deliver secure research to accommodate new and established private sector start-ups and partners," Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross said in a press release.

The funds will procure research computing equipment for two projects: the Madison CyberLabs (MadLabs) and the Heartland Technology Center. The first is an $18 million, 40,000 square foot facility that will house applied research projects for faculty, researchers and corporate partners. The latter is a business incubator housing DSU spinoff companies, start-up companies relying on the expertise of DSU students, or corporate partners.

The project was made possible by the regional planning efforts led by the First District Association of Local Governments.
