Broncos split two Cornbelt League games

The Madison Broncos closed the gap to two runs after the top of the sixth inning on Sunday, only to see the Flandreau Cardinals score eight runs to gain a 15-5 Cornbelt League victory at Flandreau.

Madison scored once but Flandreau scored four times in the first frame.

The Cardinals tacked on one run in the fourth and two more in the fifth to hold a 7-1 advantage.

Madison scored four runs in the sixth inning to trim the lead to two, 7-5.

Flandreau exploded for seven runs in the sixth inning to break open the game. The Cardinals tacked on one run in the seventh frame for the final score.

Madison had seven hits. Greg Biagi smacked two doubles while Mitch McNary added two singles.

Nick Bird, Brian Miller and Jon Waba each had a single for the Broncos. Matt Burpee, Bird, Miller, Waba and Doug Iverson each had an RBI.

Hunter Jamison started on the hill for Madison and suffered the loss. He worked four innings, gave up seven runs (two unearned) on seven hits, struck out three and walked three. Brandon Burg pitched one inning of relief and gave up five runs (one unearned) on two hits. He struck out one and walked four.

Bird pitched one inning of relief and gave up two runs (one unearned) on one hit. He walked one. Drew Pierson finished on the mound for the Broncos and worked 2/3 of an inning in relief. He gave up one run on one hit and walked two batters.

Madison 10, Wood Ducks 8

The Broncos overcame a 6-4 deficit to gain a 10-8 win against the Hartford/Humboldt Wood Ducks on Thursday at Humboldt.

Madison scored twice in the third inning and once in the fourth for a 3-0 lead, but the Wood Ducks scored four times in the fourth for a 4-3 advantage.

Madison deadlocked the score at 4-4, but the Wood Ducks scored twice to regain the lead, 6-4.

Madison scored four times in the seventh to grab an 8-6 lead. The Broncos added two more runs in the eighth inning.

Hartford-Humboldt scored once in the seventh and once in the eighth frame.

Madison belted out 12 hits. Bird had three singles and three RBIs. Miller had two singles and three RBIs. Biagi added a pair of singles.

Burpee had a double and an RBI. Marcus Vanden Bosch, Waba and Josh Giles each had one single. Vanden Bosch and Jacob Giles each had one RBI.

Brock Selgestad started on the mound for Madison and worked 3 2/3 innings. He gave up four runs on four hits while striking out two and walking five. Jacob Giles worked 2/3 of an inning in relief and gave up two runs on two hits. He struck out two and walked four.

Bird finished on the hill for Madison and worked 4 2/3 innings to pick up the win. He gave up two runs on four hits and walked three.

Madison (4-5 overall, 3-4 in league) will host Lennox Only One in a Cornbelt League clash on Thursday at Flynn Field at 7:30 p.m.

The Broncos will go to Canova for a 2 p.m. game on Sunday.
