Broncos hit three home runs in 11-1 trashing of PBR

The Madison Broncos used a stellar pitching performance by Nick Bird and the long ball to roll past Dell Rapids PBR 11-1 in a seven-inning Cornbelt League game on Tuesday night at Flynn Field.

Bird limited PBR to just four hits as he went the distance to pick up the win. He struck out five and walked six batters.

After a scoreless first inning, the Broncos plated five runs in the second frame including an RBI double by Mitch McNary. Jacob Giles had a two-RBI single while Trevor Johnson and Jon Waba each had an RBI single.

Madison stretched its lead to 7-0 in the third inning when Bird and Brian Miller hit back-to-back solo home runs. Bird sent his round-tripper over the left-field fence while Miller sent a blast over the right-field fence.

The Broncos added a run in the fourth frame to stretch the lead to 8-0. Johnson belted a home run over the left-field fence.

Dell Rapids scored its only run of the game in the sixth inning.

Madison belted out 14 hits off two Dell Rapids hurlers. Johnson was 3-for-3 at the plate with a home run, two singles, two RBIs and scored twice. Bird had a home run, a single, two RBIs and scored twice. Miller had a home run, two RBIs and scored once.

Greg Biagi and McNary each had a double, a single and one RBI. Biagi also scored twice. Waba had two singles, one RBI and scored once. Giles had one single, two RBIs and scored once. Matt Burpee added a single and scored once.

Zach Uttecht had a double for PBR.

Cameron Kerkhove started for PBR and suffered the loss. He worked 3 2/3 innings, gave up eight runs on eight hits and walked two batters. Dale Solberg closed the game for PBR and worked 2 2/3 innings. He gave up three runs on five hits, struck out one and didn't allow a walk.

Madison (9-5 overall, 8-4 in league) will go to Colman for a 5 p.m. contest on Sunday.
