The Heart-of-the-Lakes Senior Games will take place this weekend in Madison, starting at 8 a.m. on Friday with a four-person golf scramble at The Lakes Golf Course.

Madison's Mike O'Connell participated in his first Heart-of-the-Lakes Senior Games last year, and the 52-year-old will compete in the Games once again this year.

O'Connell competed in bowling and the javelin throw last year. He is thinking about doing just one event this time around.

"I will be competing in bowling," he said. "I will do mixed bowling, doubles and singles."

O'Connell is a regular at Cherry Lanes, where he has an average of 223, and he had an 816 series this past season.

He is not sure about throwing the javelin this year at the Senior Games.

"There were some good memories of throwing the javelin last year and, of course, there was some pain," he said. "It was my favorite throw in college."

O'Connell, who is an assistant track coach at Chester Area School, coached his athletes in the javelin at the Howard Wood Dakota Relays this year.

Anyone age 50 and older can compete in the Heart-of-the-Lakes Senior Games. There are recreational games such as bean bag and shuffleboard, along with competitive events including track, basketball and softball.

Participating in the Senior Games is good for a person's self-esteem, according to O'Connell.

"It is good for your self-esteem and it gives you a chance to see where you stand against people your age," he said. "It also gives you a chance to get outdoors and get some exercise to keep fit."
