Trojans gain two wins against Champion Christian

The Dakota State University Trojans baseball team picked up a pair of wins in Alexandria, La., Tuesday afternoon.

The Trojans needed 10 innings to down Champion Christian (Ark.) 5-4 in the first game and rolled to a 12-1 victory in the second contest.

In the opening game, DSU trailed 4-0 before mounting a rally to deadlock the score at 4-4 after five innings. The Trojans were able to push the winning run across the plate in the 10th frame.

The Tigers scored two runs in the second and fourth innings for a 4-0 lead.

DSU scored three times in the fourth. Samuel Drummond had an RBI single while Marcos Alvarez ripped a two-RBI double to trim the lead to 4-3. The Trojans deadlocked the score at 4-4 in the fifth inning. With one on, Ryan Jackovich smacked an RBI double to deep right field.

Neither team scored until the bottom of the 10th. With two outs, Jackovich and Alvarez hit back-to-back singles. An error by Champion Christian loaded the bases for the Trojans. Tanner Landman delivered with a walk-off RBI single to score pinch runner Alec Gannon for the game-winning run.

DSU collected 12 hits. Alvarez was 3-for-5 at the plate with a double, two singles and two RBIs. Jackovich had a double, a single and an RBI. Drummond added two singles and an RBI.

Chris Burke started on the mound for DSU and worked four innings. He gave up four runs (two unearned) on two hits and struck out five batters. Micah DeHarty picked up the win in relief. He worked six scoreless innings, limited the Tigers to just two hits and struck out four.

In the second game, DSU built a 5-0 lead after 2 1/2 innings and went on to post a 12-1 win.

Jerrett Plunkett had a 2-RBI double and Keaton Hoeke added an RBI in the second frame.

DSU scored once in the fourth, three times in the sixth and five times in the seventh inning.

DSU clubbed out 12 hits. Hoeke and Jalen Boyd each had a double and two singles. Hoeke scored three times and drove in two runs. Plunkett added a double, a single and a game-high four RBIs.

Trey Randel evened his record (1-1) with the win. He pitched four innings and allowed an unearned run on four hits. He struck out three. Steven Suarez worked two innings in relief, limiting the Tigers to just one hit and had three strikeouts. Andrew Dayton worked the seventh inning.

LSU-Alexandria 5, DSU 3

The two-game winning streak for the Trojans was halted by the LSU-Alexandria Generals on Thursday. The Generals exploded for four runs in the fifth frame and held on for a 5-3 win.

Neither team scored in the first three innings. The Trojans got on the scoreboard in the fourth. With one out, Chris Kropuenske doubled and later scored on an RBI single by Chris Burke. The Trojans also scored on an error and a wild pitch to grab a 3-0 advantage.

LSU-Alexandria scored once in the fourth inning and four times in the fifth.

The Generals outhit DSU 8-5. Burke went 2-for-2 at the plate with two singles and an RBI. Jerrett Plunkett added two singles while Kropuenske had a double and scored once.

Sage Hudson suffered the loss as he worked four-plus innings and allowed five runs on six hits. He struck out three. Dayton tossed one inning in relief and gave up two hits. Ryan Peterson pitched a scoreless sixth inning.

DSU (2-7) will close out the Louisiana trip on Thursday evening with a game against NCAA Division III Louisiana College.
