Area residents interested in donating nonperishable food items to their local food pantries can participate in the 27th annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive scheduled this Saturday.

Postal workers and other volunteers will pick up canned and boxed food items that are placed by area residents' mailboxes on Saturday morning. Donors should place their nonperishable-food cans and boxes into bags and set them near their mailboxes.

The food pantries can accept donations of canned foods such as fruit, vegetables, tuna, spaghetti sauce and meat and boxed foods such as spaghetti, cereal, oatmeal and crackers. Jerry Martian, a food drive organizer, said the food pantry also appreciates donations of laundry soap.

Donors should not have concerns if their food items are not picked up early Saturday. Martian said volunteers will spend part of the afternoon picking up donations at the mailbox sites.

Nationally, the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive is organized by the National Association of Letter Carriers with help from partners that include the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, U.S. Postal Service, AFL-CIO, United Way, National Rural Letter Carriers Association, Kellogg's, Valpak, Valassis, CVS Health and local food pantries.
