The Madison Police Department is investigating the theft of three vehicles in the southeastern portion of Madison since early May.

Two of the stolen vehicles were found after they were abandoned; the third, a pickup, has not been recovered.

Chief Justin Meyer of the Madison Police Department said two vehicles were reported stolen on the morning of May 2 from the 500 block of S.E. 9th St. Meyer said the vehicles, both minivans, were likely stolen during the previous night.

One vehicle was found in a parking lot located on the 500 block of S.E. 8th St. The second vehicle was found in Sioux Falls about three hours after it was reported stolen. Authorities were assisted with the second vehicle's recovery by a tracking device that was operating in the minivan.

No damage to the two vehicles was reported.

The third vehicle, a 1998 blue Chevrolet Silverado pickup, was reported stolen on May 10 and has not been recovered. The pickup was stolen from the 1000 block of Laura Lee Court, a cul-de-sac near S.E. 9th St.

According to Meyer, the vehicle owners reported that they had left their vehicles unlocked with the ignition keys left inside the autos. Police officers will continue to search for the missing pickup.

Meyer said Madison residents should take more precautions against having their vehicles stolen.

Individuals having information about the car thefts should call the Madison Police Department at 256-7531 or CrimeStoppers at 256-7634. They can also contact the police via the Madison Police Department Facebook page.
