The Madison City Commission approved having city parks officials submit a grant application to the South Dakota Department of Health to obtain grant money for mosquito control in Madison during 2019.

Mike McGillivray, city parks supervisor, presented a letter to the city commissioners during their Monday meeting that outlines the state’s plans for providing funding for mosquito control. Community officials involved in mosquito control efforts are expected to submit their applications for the grant funding by June 1.

State health officials are interested in preventing the spread of West Nile virus, a disease spread by mosquitoes, in South Dakota. The state will make the funds available as reimbursements for money spent by communities to control the insects.

Health Department officials said $500,000 is available during 2019 to assist cities, counties and tribes.
