The Madison School Board approved a proposal to offer free meals to students from the school cafeterias at the end of this school year.

Mitchell Brooks, the school district’s business manager, told the school board members that the cash balance for Madison Central’s food-service budget was more than adequate to provide free meals on May 22-29.

May 29 is the last day of school and an early-release day.

Brooks also proposed offering free cafeteria meals on May 22-29 to staff members and parents who visit the public schools on those days and want to eat with their children. Brooks told the board members that he estimated the free meal program might amount to $11,500 in costs.

Tom Farrell, school board president, supported the proposal, saying the free adult meals might provide “good marketing” for the school district’s cafeteria program.

Madison Central’s cafeterias have provided free meals during limited time periods previously – at the end of the 2017-18 school year and at the start of this current school year.
